How I View Therapy
Philosophy and Approach
I believe that we are all doing the best that we can given the cards that we have been dealt, and that we can make changes in order to consciously create ourselves and mold us into the people that we want to become. I believe that humans are social creatures that are geared for relationships. Love and support are the foundations of happiness and those relationships need ongoing tending. My view is that as your therapist it is my job to join you in digging into topics, plant seeds of growth and help you tend to your relationships. I aim to meet clients where they are and offer a safe and comfortable environment to work on things that hold them back. I strive to do therapy in a culturally competent manner, focused on human equity, and in consideration of intergenerational trauma and socio-cultural influences. I work from a narrative and emotion-focused lens, while implementing somatic techniques to increase self-awareness.
Who I am as a Person
Cis-het female. Born 1984 in California. I am a survivor of trauma (yup therapists have theirs too!) and poverty. I grew up in an impoverished town that had the most homicides per capita when I was in high school. And I am the first of my family to go attend college.
I am happily married, with a dog. When I am not working, I enjoy redoing furniture, thrifting, learning, camping and laughing with/at my husband and dog.
What a Session Feels Like
To be honest, I fluctuate between being very tender, and very challenging. I tend to spend a bit of diving into your deep emotional experience, a bit of time collaborating on meaning making, and then wrap up with some laughs and debriefing.
I greatly value feedback, and will regularly ask you what you feel is working or helping, or what you like and don’t like about our sessions. I believe that this is your session and I do not want to make you do things that you don’t find helpful. It works best if we both want to “do the work”.
Why Choose a Marriage and Family Therapist?
Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) offer specialized training in family dynamics and relationship issues, providing a systemic approach to mental health that emphasizes the interconnectedness of individual and relational well-being.
Discover the distinct advantages of working with an MFT for comprehensive and effective therapy.
Specialization in Family Dynamics
MFTs are specifically trained to address issues within the context of family systems and relationships.
If a client’s primary concerns involve marital problems, parent-child conflicts, or issues within a family unit, an MFT’s specialized training in these areas can be particularly beneficial.
They often view problems through a systemic lens, considering how individual behaviors and emotions are interconnected within the family unit.
Expertise in Couples Therapy
MFTs are typically well-versed in couples therapy techniques and strategies.
They can provide focused interventions to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and enhance intimacy within romantic relationships.
Clients seeking therapy for marital issues or wanting to strengthen their relationship might prefer the expertise an MFT can offer in this specific area.
Understanding of Life’s Developmental Stages
MFTs are trained to understand and navigate the various developmental stages of families—from formation through to dissolution or change.
This knowledge allows them to assist families in adapting to life transitions such as divorce, blending families, or coping with the challenges of raising children.
Holistic Perspective on Mental Health:
While LPCs and LCSWs also provide holistic care, MFTs are uniquely trained to understand how individual mental health is interconnected with family dynamics and relational patterns.
They may focus not only on individual healing but also on improving overall family functioning, which can be crucial for sustained progress in therapy.
Tailored Interventions for Relationships
MFTs often utilize interventions and techniques specifically designed for relationship dynamics.
This might include teaching conflict resolution skills, facilitating structured dialogues between family members, or conducting relationship assessments to identify areas needing improvement.
Preference for Systemic Approach
Clients who appreciate a systemic approach to therapy, which examines how each family member influences and is influenced by others, may prefer working with an MFT.
This approach can provide deeper insights into relational patterns and dynamics that contribute to the client’s concerns.
Ultimately, the choice between an MFT, LPC, or LCSW depends on the specific needs and preferences of the client.
While all three types of therapists can provide valuable support and guidance, MFTs offer specialized training and expertise in addressing issues within the context of relationships and family systems.
